Gavin Reed - The best of an apprenticeship: real impact at Refresco
01 December 2015
Meet Gavin, our IT apprentice. His journey with us began in 2012, and now he's an integral member of the IT team. We quizzed him about his perspective on what an apprenticeship with Refresco entails.
I used to work in a bakery, which I knew wasn't for me at all. I've always had an interest in IT, and I enjoy building computers, so it just made sense to make a career out of it. I now get to satisfy my interest by working with different technology – I love learning about all the systems and machinery we have in place here.
Where to start! Training is important to me, as I'm still learning my trade. I have finished my Level 3 QCF qualification at Bridgwater College and now participating in Microsoft certification training. Microsoft certification training will allow me to develop my skills in IT support, and Refresco ensures I get the right support for upcoming exams. I also have a yearly appraisal, where I can review my strengths/weaknesses and discuss my future development.
I'd say the most valuable element is the opportunity to learn. Sometimes apprenticeships can shy away from giving the apprentice much responsibility, but not here. I've been able to jump straight in and learn the ropes from experienced professionals. I feel valued as an equal to all the other staff members. I'm getting real hands-on experience and I'm kept in the loop about all the current projects.
I feel supported by my colleagues. Our IT plays a key part in the success of the business, so we need to be on top form at all times. It's a really professional team, and every department is full of friendly people. Refresco has invested in me and the opportunities here are endless.
I love that my work has a real impact across the whole company. I find working in IT support really rewarding, because the day to day ‘customers' are employees of Refresco. Reliable, efficient IT systems result in happy, efficient workers. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing that my hard work benefits them directly. And it's exciting to be working with state of the art equipment and advanced technology in such a pleasant, friendly atmosphere.
If you put the effort in, you will definitely be rewarded. All it takes is a willingness to learn and to embrace the challenges that comes with the role. You definitely won't regret it. You'll genuinely be helping Refresco, and in return they will help you too.
